In 1977, Harvey Milk became one of the first openly gay individuals elected to public office when he won his seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. {NAME} — today, on his birthday, we honor the legacy of Harvey Milk by rising above hate and fighting to end gun violence. In 1977, Harvey Milk became one of the first openly gay individuals elected to public office when he won his seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In his time in office, eleven months, Harvey would fight for and help pass the nation's very first ordinance protecting gay rights, speak out against gentrification and displacement of minority communities, and work tirelessly to bolster his community. However, his time and the progress he brought to San Francisco were cut short when he was murdered by a homophobic former co-worker who shot him five times. To this day, LGBTQIA+ individuals face more danger in their daily lives from gun violence than the average American. According to the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data, people who identify as LGBTQIA+ are more than twice as likely to be the victim of gun violence. This is a tragic disparity that starts young: 16% of LGBTQIA+ students report being threatened or injured with a weapon while in school. When in the wrong hands, guns give racist, homophobic, extremist individuals the ability to carry out their disgusting ideology to the fullest extent. In a country like ours where those guns are readily available, the pipeline from hate to murder is short. Today, we honor the legacy of Harvey Milk by recognizing his work for a future of inclusivity and justice. We also reaffirm our dedication to fighting the inadequate policies that allow hateful people to access firearms easily and target LGBTQIA+ individuals. By passing strong gun safety legislation, we can begin the journey toward the future Harvey Milk fought for — a future where everyone can feel safe in living their truth loudly and proudly.
