The Dreamhouse was available to rent for two lucky guests from July 21st to 22nd.¹ [Barbie house]( Credits: Airbnb / Hogwash Studios¹ Things to know It really is a Barbie world: The rise of single women in homeownership It really is a Barbie world: The rise of single women in homeownership If you haven’t seen the movie, you’ve likely seen one of the plethora of marketing collabs out there—it’s a Barbie summer to say the least. Barbie hit the theaters on July 21st and brought in $162M during its opening weekend, making it the largest debut for a female director and biggest opening weekend of 2023.² But it’s no surprise the movie made a splash! Barbie made her debut in 1959 and quickly became an iconic doll and household name. Three years later, in 1962, Barbie became a homeowner to the Dreamhouse, inspiring girls across the country. To this day, Mattel reports that the company sells a new Barbie Dreamhouse every two minutes.³ Barbie isn’t the only one with a Dreamhouse When the Dreamhouse was released in 1962, financial institutions could legally turn down mortgage applications for women without male co-signers. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which helped women gain access to loans and credit by banning discrimination based on sex or marital status, wasn’t passed for more than a decade later in 1974. Since then, women have pursued homeownership in numbers that have shifted the pre-ECOA era. As of 2023, single women homebuyers outnumbered single men homebuyers, 17% to 9%, respectively.⁴ The numbers make it clear that single women have learned to achieve homeownership despite the barriers that stood between them. And although they’re doing it in a pricey housing market with increasingly expensive mortgage rates, single women comprise the second largest group of homebuyers and have done so every year since 1981.⁵ How have women become leaders in homeownership? One important factor is life expectancy; on average the lifespan of a woman⁶ is about 5 years longer than the lifespan of a man in the US, and about 7 years longer worldwide, making women more likely to be widowed and assume ownership of property than men. Aside from that, there are more college-educated women than there are college-educated men.⁷ A college degree can translate to higher paying salaries, giving women a higher chance at the opportunity to own a home. Women today are also more likely to buy a house before marriage than they were in the past—a survey found that 65 percent of single women homebuyers said they’d rather not wait for marriage to buy a home, and 30 percent of women homeowners bought when they were single.⁸  Fun facts on single women homeowners⁹:  - Single women are more likely than single men to own a home in 48 of 50 states. - Single women own about 10.76 million homes, while single men own about 8.12 million. - There’s evidence that single women are more willing than single men to make sacrifices to become homeowners. - Louisiana has the highest share of homes owned by single women. - North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states where single men own a higher share of homes than single women. - Wyoming has the smallest gap in homeownership rates among single women and men. --------------------------------------------------------------- Better Mortgage Go from accepted offer to commitment letter in 24 hours with Better Mortgage [Get started with One Day Mortgage¹⁰]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Press play Follow us on social to stay up to date with the latest mortgage tech, tips, and tools: Watch on [TikTok]( • [Instagram]( • [Facebook]( • [YouTube]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Better Mortgage Questions?
