In honor of this celebratory month, we’ll be sharing the story of the Hunterfly Road Houses, which once was among the country’s largest independent 19th-century Black communities. What are the Hunterfly Road Houses? [The Hunterfly Road Houses]( were discovered by Pratt Institute professor James Hurley and pilot Joseph Haynes while doing an aerial survey over the Bedford-Stuyvesant area for a neighborhood workshop in 1968. These homes are the remaining remnants of a thriving Black community called Weeksville, founded in 1838 after the state of New York abolished slavery in 1827. Prithi Kanakamedala, a historian and professor at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York, says the Hunterfly Road Houses symbolize what was possible for free Black communities in the US during the 19th-century. Weeksville, named after James Weeks who was one of the community’s largest property owners, became a safe haven and was home to about 700 families. Its flourishing community included a school, church, and newspaper called the Freedman’s Torchlight, which served as an educational resource to newly freed slaves by publishing lessons on the alphabet, English and arithmetic. In 1969, shortly after being rediscovered by James Hurley and Joseph Haynes, the Society for the Preservation of Weeksville and Bedford Stuyvesant History was established by Joan Maynard. In 1971 the Hunterfly Road Houses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Hunterfly Road Houses have been restored, and serve as an interactive [museum that is free and open to the public](. The importance of equitable solutions and moving forward together Focusing on the creation of programs that provide equitable solutions to close the Black-White homeownership gap is important now more than ever. The Black American homeownership rate has only increased 0.4% over the past decade.² As of 2023, the Black American homeownership rate lags significantly at 44% compared to the homeownership rates of other racial groups. Hispanic Americans homeownership rate came in at 50.6%, Asian Americans at 62.8%, and White Americans at 72.7%.² That’s why we need organizations like the [National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB)]( who are committed to enhancing the professional and business conditions of their members by strengthening the consumer capacity of Black, minority, and emerging target market segments. They work to promote the real estate industry in general, utilizing economic, political, legal, and social leverage to remediate disparate and discriminatory housing and property ownership policies and practices in the US. NAREB’s Two Million New Black Homeowners Program (2Mn5) offers advocacy for Black homeownership and assistance with access to credit and neighborhood and community development projects that foster ownership, among other initiatives. The program includes the following activities: - Advocacy for Black homeownership with public and private sector leaders at the local, state and federal levels - Advertising and marketing to black consumers on the financial and other benefits of Black Homeownership - Activism for access to credit and the reform and changing of regulatory policies and laws that support increased Black homeownership - Action-based community outreach that raises awareness and educates communities across the country of the important role homeownership plays in closing the wealth gap in the black community - Neighborhood and Community Development Projects that foster homeownership; - Advocacy and Leadership Development Training for NAREB local leaders and other community and neighborhood stakeholders - Business development training and technical assistance for Black entrepreneurs through NAREB’s Share the Wealth Series and NAREB University You can learn more about [NAREB’s 2Mn5 program on their website]( and locate a qualified [NAREB Realists through their NAREB Membership Portal](. --------------------------------------------------------------- Better Mortgage Are you a first time homebuyer?
