True story: Back in my client days, I had a client who wanted to sell his $30+ million info publishing company (I heard it was worth that much — don’t know for sure, but I do know he was the biggest in his niche by a country mile) and “prettied-up” all the sales pages I wrote. When I asked why, he said, yes, the response was better when ugly. But he was trying to sell his business at the time. And he quickly found out would-be buyers did not want to spend a fortune on buying a business with websites that look like they were designed by a kid in a garage somewhere. Yes, even though those “ugly” sites made more money. The irony writes itself, doesn’t it? Another true story: Back during our Oceans 4 Masterminds I co-hosted with Ryan Levesque, Jack Born, & Andre Chaperone we had a recurring client in the weight loss niche come to almost every single one of them that had trouble cracking the cold traffic puzzle. My advice? Take their pretty sites and fugly them up. They had all kinds of slick graphics. Lots of before & after pics. And they looked really professional. Thus I told them to test — and they had the cold traffic volume to do a statistically relevant test — making everything totally “Drudge Report” looking… with ugly courier font, all black & white, maybe just ONE before & after pic (and even that be grainy-looking), with obnoxious colors, on a totally Web 1.0 borderline “geocities”-looking site, but while still making everything clear to read. Total & outright design debauchery. Did they take my advice? No idea. But I highly doubt it. Still, would have made a helluva test. Now, am I saying to always make what’s pretty ugly? No. That’s not what I am saying at all. I’m saying something completely different altogether and totally between the lines. And it goes well beyond “test the opposite of what you’re doing now.” No, I am talking about an idea & strategy that runs through practically my entire new book Markauteur about creating a visual & design marketing universe, that can help you create a loyal horde of fans, customers, and clients who love to buy from your world and hate to leave it. Some of the ideas in this book are downright design debauchery. And I predict most people who read it won’t follow them all to the T out of fear. But for the few who do? I also predict they might see profits, engagement, and an excited fanbase of customers & clients who buy potentially JUST because of the “look” of the business and its various marketing pieces, products, and ads. Do it right and your business & marketing becomes almost a like a Hitchcock movie: “It cannot be seen, only experienced.” If that doesn’t make sense to you then my new book will likely do you no good. And everything inside will go right over your head. Thus, save your money. But if it does make sense, and if you want to read more and get in on the special launch pricing, here is what to do: 1. Read every single word at the URL below to make an informed purchase 2. Buy it before Friday 12/23 at midnight EST to get it at the launch discount. 3. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
