She went 28 years without painting ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ Hello {NAME}, Meet Amy. She's a Nature Studio member: Before joining, she hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in 28 years. This is her story, in her own words (and I swear, she’s not on commission 🤣): "When I was a young girl, I enjoyed drawing very much and I was often complimented on my abilities by friends and relatives. So when I went to college, I decided to take a drawing class.  But the first day of class I quickly realized that my skills were not very advanced at all when I saw the work of my fellow classmates. My artwork looked primitive compared to the other students.  I thought to myself, "I must have been mistaken about having a talent to draw, and my friends and family were mistaken too. I really don’t have the talent for art at all."  So, after that class I never picked up a pencil or brush to pursue art for 28 years.  I had the view that talent is fixed and you either have it or you don’t and there’s nothing you can do to change that. That changed when I became a mother. I learned about growth mindset in a class I took to help me be better at teaching math to my children, whom I was homeschooling.  In that class, I learned that talent and ability isn’t fixed.  It’s a result of effort and a mindset to see challenges and setbacks as learning experiences.  You can always get better and you can learn from those who are better than you, rather than seeing them as threat or a confirmation that you don’t have what it takes. In 2018 I decided I needed a hobby to de-stress and I decided to give watercolors a go again. I took my new mindset with me. I learned so much by challenging myself, learning from others, and putting in time and effort.  I know that you never really "arrive" and I’m excited to keep learning and growing.  I’m a little sad that I wasted 28 years. Who knows where my art would be at with that much experience. However, I hope this story can inspire others to see things from a growth mindset perspective and to keep going. Your mind is very powerful. Take those negative thoughts captive. Don't listen to them. I have learned from Anna a very structured series of steps I can use with any painting I choose to do, no matter how complex it is. You'll get to learn these steps by heart the more tutorials you do. Armed with that, I've been able to try many solo pieces and even add twists to some tutorials." {NAME}, take a look at this recent painting of Amy’s that was selected as member Artwork of the Month this May: Amy went on to say: "I'm more confident because it's no longer a mysterious process totally reliant on what seems like some magical artist ability to make the right choices. A lot of "art" tutorials appear that way because they don't explain the "why" behind what they do, or they don't keep showing/explaining the same processes from start to finish of each painting. So it looks like it's some mysterious artistic intuition. There are definite skills and steps you can learn. And once you've come to understand things like how paper, brushes, color, layering etc. work, you can then try more challenging subjects and develop your own style and make creative choices… For me, when I started painting again, I felt too lost to just play around on a sketchbook and learn from that. I always wanted to have something to show for my work, so I used the tutorials to learn. Then I had a painting I could frame at the end." {NAME}, if Amy’s story has inspired you and you’re ready to join her and over 6,000 other artists in Nature Studio: You can get 25% off forever on a 6-monthly membership plan if you sign up before Sunday 4th June.
