Itâs my brother Jackâs 40th birthday this weekend. Because heâs an acrylic artist, Iâve ordered him a big set of acrylic paints 🎁 He gets through them soooo quickly. Multiple tubes worth in one big painting. As I was adding his paints to my cart, (and OK yes, thinking how expensive they were!) it reminded me just how long ago it was that I needed to buy watercolour paints. Iâve still got tubes of watercolour paint Iâve had for YEARS, even the colours I use regularly. 🎨 Watercolour is an amazingly good value paint to work with. Especially when you paint in my realistic style; a tiny bit of pigment goes a long, long way. Itâs one of the cheapest hobbies you can do. Thereâs a mistake lots of people make when they start out with watercolour though. They decide to save money by buying lower-quality student grade supplies. Only to quickly realise they can achieve better results by upgrading to better quality materials. It ends up costing more money, energy and time than they needed to spend. 🤦 Weâve recently been discussing equipment in my School, and a lot of members made that mistake too: My cheap paper, brushes and student grade paints sit in a drawer unusedâ¦.

If youâre investing in watercolour supplies, youâll actually save money in the longer term by getting the best quality materials you can right from the start. Starting with watercolour is now more affordable with my âstarter kitâ To help people avoid that pitfall, I want to make starting out with quality supplies as affordable as possible. So Iâve now pared down my full equipment list into a '[starter kit](. It has 10 paints, a sketchbook, and some paintbrushes, plus a pencil, eraser and tracing paper. This kit will allow you to paint the majority of my beginner level tutorials, and theyâre a great all-round palette of paints to have for mixing endless other colours too. 🌈 "Quality of watercolor supplies are very important. I see it as an investment. Anna has chosen quality products and takes the guess work out of mixing colors. The paints last an amazingly long time." - Sue Ordering your starter kit online is now easier To make buying it as easy as possible, Iâve used Amazon US to enable you to add all the items to your basket via one page, which you can access via [the button here](. [Order your starter kit]( OR Building your own starter kit is now simpler If you want to give realistic watercolour a try before investing in supplies, Iâve made it easier for you to build your own starter kit from what you can get your hands on. You may well find you already have some of what you need, or that a friend has some they could lend you. "I started out with super-cheap paper and a watercolor set a neighbor lent me. Nothing high grade. My brushes were nothing special. But it was enough to get me started -and- enough to let me see that I had enough interest to justify an investment in the paper/paints/brushes you recommend. - Patrice (community member) [Build your own starter kit]( Expanding your kit is now quicker and easier too There can come a time when you may want to introduce some more colours to your palette, treat yourself to a tabletop easel to make painting more comfortable or even invest in a daylight lamp so you can paint on into the dark evenings. 🌙 Iâve made that even easier for you now too with a new section of the Supplies page with buying links: [Expand your kit]( I hope this helps if youâve been wanting to get started with watercolour, or to upgrade your supplies to get better results. If youâve been working with student grade materials, youâre going to notice a huge difference. "I played with student paints for a while⦠What a HUGE difference in my final results by using Quality Paper and Artist grade Pigments! - Nancy P Want more advice on what supplies to get hold of? And, in case youâre still deliberating over materials, Iâve written a new blog post about the supplies you need to start out. [Come and have a read]( of it. Thereâs more advice from members in there, as well some extra money saving tips for when youâre getting started. 🖌ï¸ Happy painting! Anna
