Christmas is the special time of year to celebrate with family and remember those family members before us. [View it in your browser.] Merry Christmas from AncientFaces [Santa Claus Over Time] [Santa Claus Over Time] [In 1823, the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (known commonly as "The Night Before Christmas") popularized our current vision of Santa Claus. Based on the life of St. Nicholas (a 4th century Greek saint who was known for his secret gift giving), the "jolly old elf" has, in some ways, become the very image of Christmas in the West. He's known by many names - Father Christmas, Sinterklaas, Christkind, Kris Kringle, to name a few - but he's always a figure of largesse and the magic of the season. But we don't have to tell you about Santa - he's been a part of everyone's lives for centuries. How we envision him has changed - he's become rounder and more jolly (but don't we all, with time?) - yet his spirit endures. Following are some photos/drawings of Santa in the 19th and 20th centuries. Do they picture Santa as you know him?] [Read more] [Collecting for Xmas] [There's always been a need for charity. In 1910 NYC, it was for a Christmas dinner for the New York Home For Homeless Boys.] [N.Y.C. lodging house -- Xmas tree] [1910, New York City - a lodging house at Christmas. Some of those kids look like dolls!] [Franklin & Warren Nupp] [Such adorable boys! Another lost photo (1920's?), it's a shame it was lost to their family.] [City of Paris Store, San Francisco] [It was SO impressive - it made the Christmas season! City of Paris tree, San Francisco.] [See more on AncientFaces] [AncientFaces.com] Follow us on [Googleplus] [Friend us on Facebook] [Follow us on Twitter] [LinkIn] [Tumblr] [RSS Feed] [Pinterest] Our mailing address is: AncientFaces 65 Washington St Santa Clara, California 95050 [Add us to your address book] You are receiving this email because you opted to receive select information from AncientFaces.com. © 2016 AncientFaces [unsubscribe] | [update email preferences]
