Let’s take a look at the most important updates that December has brought us. Google Releases December 2022 Link Spam Update The biggest piece of news in December was the rollout of Google’s link spam update. With the link spam update, Google intends to further neutralize the impact of unnatural links on search results using SpamBrain. SpamBrain is an AI-based spam-prevention system launched in 2018, with Google engineers continuously improving the tool. To give an idea of the rapid progression of this tool, in 2021 SpamBrain was able to identify nearly six times more spam sites than in 2020. Google says that SpamBrain can now detect both sites buying links, and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links. How has your site fared as a result of the update? Have you seen any fluctuations in rankings? And how has this impacted your approach to acquiring backlinks? Just Keep On Scrolling Scrolling on Google, that is. The search engine is now rolling out continuous scroll on the desktop search results. A Google spokesperson said the following about continuous scroll: “So starting today, we’re bringing continuous scrolling to desktop so you can continue to see more helpful search results with fewer clicks. It’s now even easier to get inspired with more information at your fingertips. Now, when you scroll down you’ll continue to find relevant results so that you can discover new ideas. When you reach the bottom of a search results page, up to six pages of results will be automatically shown until you see a “More results” button if you wish to continue further.” While it seems like it is a small change, talk has begun of how continuous scroll is impacting CTR for the organic search results and impressions for those running Google Ads. As of now the data set is small, but it is something to keep in mind. Google Tests New About Carousel Continuing with tweaks to the SERPS, Google is testing a new search function that provides additional website information. This "about" carousel displays more site information, both from the site itself and from external websites. Here is a screenshot of what this looks like: What Did We Search For In 2022? As 2022 comes to a close, it is always fun to take a look at the search trends for the year. If you haven’t already, pop over to Google’s year in search website to see this year's data. [( Before looking at the site, can you guess what the top trending search was globally? It was “Wordle” – the fun 5 letter word guessing game! As we enter the new year, we are excited to see what new trends will pop up and we are excited to bring more industry insights to your inbox for as long as we can. What did you think of the changes in SEO that 2022 has brought? Anything we missed?
