Also: To everyone who lost their lives during the protests last year, we remember you. [View Web Version]( [Zikoko Daily] 20th October, 2021 Hey there. Today’s letter is all about the #EndSARSMemorial. A year ago today, the Nigerian army fired at peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos state, and then tried to gaslight us. We’re remembering those we lost, even as we try to stay hopeful. I’m really, really proud of all of us. Please stay safe and take care of yourself today Doyin, our [Citizen]( contributor, and I talk about a report he’s put together to find out what the government did after the protests 👇🏾: Ifoghale Newsletter Editor After #EndSARS, what happened? ---------------------------------------------------------------  Hi Doyin. How are you today — especially considering everything that’s happening? Man, to be honest I don’t really know. We’re back to where we were exactly a year ago, and the feeling is draining. I know what you mean… So, what’s your EndSARS report about? The EndSARS panel report is a curation of what the 36 states in Nigeria (and the FCT, Abuja) were up to in the aftermath of the protests. We’re trying to answer the question “so, how far?” Why do you think this is important? Part of the demands of the #EndSARS protests was the need for justice for victims of police brutality and the prosecution of SARS officials who have commited police brutality. This report tells us if anyone was held accountable. Does anything excite you about the future of young people in Nigeria? I think the #EndSARS protests showed that our anger can stir positive action in a growing democracy like Nigeria’s. We will only get stronger together, I believe. You’d think we would simply pay our respects, grieve together in peace and head home. But no. I suppose the Nigerian Police in Lagos have other ideas. Even Abuja is doing the most. Read Femi’s quick rundown here. [Read what's happening]( --------------------------------------------------------------- SARS Was Created When The Police Ran Away I think this is a great opportunity to tell you the really embarrassing history behind the creation of SARS. You’ll get to see how everything ended exactly how it began — with a few Policemen killing a man at a checkpoint in Yaba, Lagos, an action that caused them (and every other Police officer) to abandon the streets of Lagos because they were afraid of being attacked by the Nigerian army. [Take the quiz]( But it's not all bad Perhaps my favourite thing about the #EndSARS movement since it began last year is the fact that unlike most of our other Nigerian-related struggles, we (young people) are standing together to kick-ass and help those we can along the way.
