Hey Hassan, how come weâre getting an NYSC story today? The subject is a friend who had asked for us to grab drinks on her return to Lagos. During one of our random conversations, I said, "Let me interview you." The rest is in today's story. Iâve heard people talk about NYSC as that period where your life somehow finally comes together. Was that your experience? For me, I think it both fell apart and came together. On one hand it showed me that Nigeria is messed up, and this resulted in [cynicism]( or [nihilism](. On the other hand, it might have finalised my resolve to japa. What did you spend the year doing? Lmfaoooo. I worked at a general hospital. It was simultaneously the most rewarding and frustrating year of my life. Not as bad as todayâs subject, Iâm sure. How come she didnât throw herself into her âpassionâ, since she has a ton of free time? I think her mental health is down. Because of that, her passion and hobbies no longer matter. Her biggest struggle at this point is finishing the programme. I'm rooting for her though. What did you find interesting about her story? I think the fact that she finds little pockets of joy in little things, like Zikoko quizzes for example. It's validation for the writers who make quizzes for work. This isnât on-theme, but what would you say is the best thing about NYSC? It removes you from your bubble and shows you the reality of Nigeria first-hand. If you've been relatively sheltered all your life, NYSC is where your delusions come to die. [Read about her NYSC experience](
