I learnt to survive by staying away. Whenever I went out to hawk, I would stay out till about 11 p.m., so I knew that all I had to do was get in, wash my dress and sleep. The height of the trauma she went through was threatening to commit suicide at the age of 12. At that point, she had seen her parents only once since she left. I was hurt throughout the conversation.
