Plus 5 New Strong Buys for Today Stocks End Mixed, But Near Their Highs Of The Day [Kevin Matras - EVP - Photo] Profit from the Pros By Kevin Matras Executive Vice President Stocks End Mixed, But Near Their Highs Of The Day [Stocks End Mixed, But Near Their Highs Of The Day]Image: Bigstock Stocks closed mixed with the Dow and the S&P ending lower, while the Nasdaq was able to finish in the green. But all of the indexes bounced decisively off their intraday lows to close near their highs of the day. Follow-through selling after Friday's disappointing jobs report weighed on stocks early. But for perspective, the economy did recover 6.4 million jobs last year, with the unemployment rate nearing 50-year lows. And with another year of robust economic growth forecast for this year, traders quickly pared those losses. In other news, Wholesale Inventories for November rose 1.4%. The stronger than expected showing should add to an already strong Q4 GDP estimate. Today we'll get the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index, and another look at retail sales via the Redbook report. We'll also hear from Fed Chair Jerome Powell today as he speaks before the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs at the U.S. Senate, at his Nomination Hearing. Stocks started the year off strongly, then slipped at the end of last week. But there's a lot of year left. And if Jamie Dimon is right (yesterday morning he said he thinks the U.S. is headed for the best economic growth in decades, while speculating that his company will likely see "the best growth we've ever had"), we could see a lot more upside to go for both the economy and the market. He went on to say that the "consumer balance sheet has never been in better shape," and "they're spending 25% more today than pre-Covid." Sounds pretty bullish, which means we could see another year of stellar gains. So make sure you're taking full advantage of it.
