Profit from the Pros Stocks Up, And Another Record High For The Dow Stocks were up yesterday, with the Dow Jones setting another new all-time high. The strength of the economy continues to support the market. And with Q3 earnings season right around the corner, coupled with the seasonal strength of the fourth quarter, stocks look poised for a strong finish to the year. The strong economy was further underscored by yesterday's PMI Services Index report which came in better than expected at 53.5 vs. views for 52.9. The ISM Non-Manufacturing Index also came in better than expected at 61.6 vs. estimates for 58.0. Analysts pointed to 'record high employment and a 14-year high in business activity' for the stellar gains. Speaking of employment, yesterday's ADP Employment Report is estimating that private payrolls increased by another 230,000 jobs in September, which is well above the consensus for 'just' 179,000. But on Friday, we'll get the official employment numbers when the Employment Situation Report comes out. At the moment, estimates are looking for 195,000 new jobs being created in September (175,000 for the private sector and 20,000 for the public). But if the ADP numbers are correct, we could see a much higher reading than expected. And that will give stocks even more reason to keep on moving higher. By the way, in spite of stocks in record territory, I think valuations look great. Especially when compared to future earnings growth. But I know some people get spooked when they see a high stock price. Of course, the price of a stock tells you nothing about its valuation. For example a $100 stock can be considered a major bargain whereas a $10 stock can be considered overvalued. And vice versa. But there's no denying the attraction of lower priced stocks. Especially when you find those overlooked gems right before they break out. I love finding those low priced picks just as much as the next guy. But there are a few things you need to watch out for.
