She had a presence of wisdom and gentleness. I noticed the minute she glanced at me. I walked into the market store at the hotel desperate to find a tube of cold sore cream. I woke up with a tenderness around my lip signaling what was to come and letting me know gluten had somehow slipped into my body. Happens every time. I asked the cashier and the lady speaking with her turned to me, "Just wait, I have something in my car to help. But get that lip balm there, it has kukui nut oil in it." She took me to her car, gave me the kukui tree leaf and showed me how to snap off the stem to reveal the salve. "Rub that on your lip, it will help it go away." I've tried many miracles before, natural and pharmaceutical, all of which lead to scabs of various discomfort and ugliness. I was unsure, but I somehow trusted her. I spent the rest of the day salving it with the leaf and the balm. It was astounding how it worked to almost make the cold sore disappear hardly noticed. I'm going to be buying truckloads of that oil, known for its ability to heal skin conditions - plus a whole lot more. But, it's not really that I want to tell you about, but the spirit of this lady, who drew me and touched all those around her. She gathered our group departing from the hotel on the Friday with our farewell gifts of kukui nut lei. She spoke to us about cultural traditions, meaning and the spiritual connectedness behind the gesture. Every word she spoke was full of purpose and love. If Aloha could be represented in form it would be her. She placed the lei around our necks and gave us a hug and a kiss full of genuine love and honour. My girls giggled but you could see their spirit lift by the gesture and recognition of the purity and importance of their souls. Later that day the hotel staff had a ceremony marking the end of the peace season and setting sail for the first time a traditional Hawaiian boat that was built by a young 21-year-old Hawaiian man. I felt blessed to observe and see the sense of community and family between the group. She spoke again at that ceremony and her words brought tears to my eyes, as well as many listening, including some of the robust Hawaiian men. She spoke of love and forgiveness, acceptance and connectedness. I knew I was in the presence of a true elder that we in the Western World no longer seem to have access to and really miss. I felt part of her family and I was sad to leave. My intuitive Savannah picked it up as well and expressed it with the words, "It's Moana's grandmother!!" I was drawn to visit Maui, because Wayne Dyer lived there (actually right in Ka'anapali where we were staying. He is my favourite spiritual mentor who has helped transform me more than anybody else on the planet. He passed over a year ago, but I met someone else here with the same spirit and intention who has also left a mark. There definitely is something about Maui.
