How I beat down Simon Cowell I was holed up in my hotel room the day before I was due to give my TBE

How I beat down Simon Cowell I was holed up in my hotel room the day before I was due to give my TBEX talk. I could not remember my words and I was plagued with doubt and insecurity. My mind ranted, "This is the worst keynote ever. No one will get it. And they'll walk out on you. " Then it donned a Simon Cowell persona and shouted, "This is the most self-indulgent rubbish I've ever heard." And to add to my mind meltdown, I knew my two beautiful daughters would be in the front row listening as I opened up with vulnerability to share my story. I envisioned the eye roll (and did get one during the talk!!) It was too late to quit or suddenly be afflicted with the worst case of food poisoning ever. So I did what I always do to my fearful always ranting mind, "Thank you for sharing. I appreciate your concern. But I'm going to do what I said I was going to do in the best way I possibly can." And I got to work practising my talk over and over again. Breaking it up with a hair salon appointment because that always brings a sense of calm - at least my hair will look good - and skipping the opening party so I could order in take out, watch Netflix and have an early night. Even though I am a social butterfly, I knew the crazy energy of a party with really cool people was not going to put me in the focused mindset of a keynote presentation. And then, minutes before I got on stage I whispered, "You've got this. If you make a difference to one person, it will be worth it. Take a deep breath and have fun." And that I did. And no one walked out. And after it I received comments that was the total opposite to what my mind told me: "I love how your presentation was not just about you. We could relate so much to your ups and downs and you gave us so many take aways to think about." Take that Simon Cowell. "That was the best keynote I've heard." And my favorite from several people., "I really needed to hear that today." If I hear those words, I know that the pain, the angst, the mental battle and the vulnerability is all worth it. As I said in my keynote, Our experiences are not for us alone, but made for us so we can share and make a positive impact. I'm so glad that food poisoning never occurred as I had such a fun time keynoting TBEX and it has inspired me to share more of this kind of thing through my channels because I know it can help. It's one reason I love writing to you all so much each week. I feel it is the most important work of what I do as it helps you the most. Don't be afraid to share your story, your failures, your lessons and your wisdom. People want what is real. They want to know they are not alone and they want to see that if you can do it they can too.
