A random South African dance lesson in a town square Yesterday, we took the kids to the town square

A random South African dance lesson in a town square Yesterday, we took the kids to the town square in Eugene for a free South African dance class. My friend Bryanna found it on a local listing and we thought the kids would have enjoy it. I was expecting to sit back and watch them dance but as soon as we arrive I caught the infectious joy of Michael, the teacher, and jumped in to start pah, pah, pahing. It took me back to Saturday mornings in Raleigh where I’d show up to Sh’Bam class. It was my favorite time of the week, where I could jive to different beats with a bunch of other people who didn’t care what you looked like. We were just there to let loose and have fun. This time we were there with people in the public walking by and waving and watching our (well mine at least) ridiculous incoordination. I started off wanting to show my girls that life is meant to be enjoyed no matter who afraid you are of what people think. The kids all ended up leaving the dance at various stages and Bryanna and I were the ones that ended up staying to the end learning the moves, jiving, laughing and having fun. It was a thoroughly enjoyable surprise. Would I have been so inclined to dance like that if I was in the public square of my own home town? I'd like to think so, but I'm not so sure. Perhaps the thought of someone I know seeing me and snickering may have limited me from having fun. In the midst of a 123, cross, tap tap tap, I thought of how great travel is. That I can come to a place like this where no one knows me and dance like no one is watching with a smile on my face. But not only that, but do it with a group of mostly strangers who are feeling the same joy and liberation. And also to be taught by this energetic professional dancer who traveled the world expressing his passion and entertained thousands for years in the Cirque Du Soleil show in Vegas!!! Michael showed up to share his passion and skills with strangers for an hour for free simply because it gives him joy. At least we think so. We couldn’t figure out why else he was doing it. I didn’t get a chance to ask as I was so caught up in his story and a few words of wisdom that he shared about life’s challenges. “They are just part of our evolution and we have a choice to make. Do we remain stuck in the pains of our past, or do we use them as a tool to share and become better?” I was in awe hearing the very same words that will form the foundation of my upcoming keynote at TBEX. Universal wisdom is there for all of us to tap into. The more you experience life and join dancing circles with strangers in foreign lands, you’ll come to understand how similar we all are and how much we share that is the same – feelings, personalities, and thoughts.
