It's so joyful There's a certain kind of joy you experience only when you live as an expat in another country. Or, if you are traveling in a place for a long time that doesn't see much of your own kind. It's one of the reasons I love living in another country, particularly a place like Raleigh, which doesn't have a lot of my own kind. I didn't really experience this joy so much living in London or Dublin because Aussies were everywhere. In Raleigh, they are few and far between. I love that. I've written before how I love being the different one as it opens so many conversations with strangers. But, I love those moments when I hear an Australian accent, like I did walking into my yoga class last week, and then into my new massage therapist. It only took a couple of words before I immediately sparked up, "Oh, you're Australian!! It's so lovely to hear your accent." In that second of recognition comes a feeling of joy you don't understand unless you experience it. If that makes sense. It's like discovering a well of water in the middle of a desert. You sit there with your new friend soaking up that accent, quickly slipping into your lingo, feeling so great because finally someone who can understand you again. You realize how much you compensate with the words that you choose and even the way you say them, so you can be understood. And here came someone who instantly understands you. Our cultural makes up so much of who we are, and you don't realize that until you leave the well and have a period of drought. You've got to leave to understand what you have. It's these random meetings with my own kind that happen every couple of months that remind me how wonderful it is to be Australian and how much I love my own people. Have you had similar experiences? Do you understand what I mean? Caz. P.S. there are more Aussies popping up in Raleigh lately. I don’t want us to do like a New York takeover in Raleigh though!!! P.P.S. Speaking of Aussies, we have a friend from home flying in today for two days with some vegemite and Tim Tams for us. I can't wait to spend the next couple of days showing off this city we love so much. After two weeks of rain we have glorious sunshine and lush green landscapes. Yay.
