Dear Friends, As you know, my lens on everything is the condition. That is what we are approaching head on this season. In fact, you’re going to hear me use that phrase a lot, as I’m invoking it to frame every interview with every guest — hoping to draw out how they can illuminate, for the rest of us, what they see from the particular angle on the experience that they inhabit. That we have an actor in this mix — the Kerry Washington — came about serendipitously. And as with serendipity, I can’t imagine the arc of this season’s exploration without it. For this actor has long thought of herself, and approached her craft, with the eye of an anthropologist. When she takes on a role, as we hear with intricacy, she investigates what it would mean to become that person. She also interrogates and inhabits every role she takes on for what it would teach her about what it means to be Kerry. She’s just written her first book, a memoir, Thicker Than Water. You may have heard her on the interview circuit last week. But she and I have been in correspondence for a few years, since she reached out to tell me that she is a listener to On Being, and that she has used the show as she deepens the public impact and presence of her calling. And I was glad to be able to speak with her before the media tour began and draw out the fullness of the arc of her and learning — both in the writing of this book and beyond it. The conversation that resulted is a graceful, revelatory adventure into “acting as a devotional practice.” Her way of moving through the world becomes a psychologically fascinating way to think about the lives we live in of the roles that are given us from the very beginning in our families of origin — and the roles we can choose to evolve and grow into. Perhaps the loveliest gift of is how this actor/anthropologist drives, in this conversation, to the matter of our together — bringing the distinctive insights from her devotion and craft to rest in a gentle challenge to us: This question of how we become who we are is the most important one right, because it's the question, I think, that will allow us to have a bit more humility around the decisiveness of where we can and cannot compromise, where we are alike and where we are dissimilar. If we have the willingness to ask ourselves, how did I become who I am and how did they become who they are? — I think it allows us to accept more of our messiness and to let ourselves be more … And I think that's where we need to be operating more from, the messy humanity of each other. And less from deciding who our enemies are and deciding who's good and who's bad. We have a joke in my family that my favorite genre is a villain origin story because I love those movies where you to see how the bad guys become the bad guys. Because the truth is, nobody's born a bad guy but very few of us. Everyone has a wound … and how we process those wounds and move forward through them is who we are. Enjoy this one.
