Daily Capsule | 9th Decemeber Hello Can you believe that we're a week into December? Time sure flies! Seems like only yesterday that we were welcoming 2018, and it's already time to say goodbye. While December may now be the 12th month of the year, did you know that it used to be the tenth? The year would start in March, and the winter days after the then tenth month were not a part of any month! Weird, huh? Today, we want to talk about Douglas Engelbart. This American inventor was truly ahead of his time. On today's date - 50 years ago, Douglas presented what is now known as the "Mother of All Demos" - a demo that changed the way technology is used. At this demo, the inventor and scientist set out to show that computers need not be room-sized industrial tools used only for crunching numbers. Douglas and his team built a system that had a complete hardware and software interface, and was named oN-Line System, or the NLS. The machine had all the features of a computer that we take for granted today. It showed the main components of a complete GUI with graphics, hypertext, word processing, video conferencing, etc, and even had a mouse! While this may not seem like that big of a deal now, but the "Mother of all Demos" was the first time any machine displayed all these computing elements together. Douglas' work eventually inspired MS Windows and even the Apple Macintosh. Fun fact: The scientist actually quit his full-time job because he wanted to make the world a better place. Here's to Douglas Engelbart and to all the other changemakers of the past, present and future.
