Daily Capsule | 18th November Hello, Science is the engine of our evolving civilisation, and scientists are the ones driving it. From the industrial revolution that changed the fundamentals of manufacturing to computers that redefined the very culture we live in, scientists have created a massive impact. But, not all scientist decisions make sense to us non-scientists! Like, when they demoted poor Pluto from a planet to a 'dwarf planet'. For years, we learnt about the nine planets of our solar system and suddenly, they told us - "Hey! It's actually eight." Now, science has decided 'kilogram' needs to change! What does it mean? No, this does not change how much you weigh (although some of us were *kind of* hoping for this). Basically, for the last 130 years, 'kilogram' was defined by the weight of a block of metal that is locked in a vault in Paris. On November 16, scientists voted for a new system that redefined kilogram so that it can now be recreated anywhere - without that block. How? By using Planck’s constant! The resulting fluctuation is less than the weight of a single eyelash. Yes, it is all very confusing to us as well. And it means, we still have to go back to our diets - after today's cheat day, of course!
