[View this email in your browser] Dear YNaija Reader, here are the week's best stories The Experience If you are reading this right now, there is a decent chance that you are watching The Experience 11, or you are watching it on TV or online. The Church Blog, which debuted this week, calls The Experience ‘[the biggest music event in Nigeria]’, a fact that is hard to argue against, when you realize that year after year, people attend in their hundreds of thousands to dance to the music of world class gospel artists. The Church Blog also notes that The Experience remains free, and gives [Paul Adefarasin the credit] for that. Death in the camps This [harrowing story] of how a youth corper died in an NYSC camp in Kano, as well as [two] [others] in other camps, makes one wonder what the role of the NYSC is supposed to be. It is a source of deep distress for us, and is the subject of our [special editorial] this evening. Toke’s Becoming Toke Makinwa’s release of her book ‘On Becoming’ has dominated conversation online for the entire week, in a way that has never really been seen before, given that her primary job is as an ‘OAP’. The book is almost entirely about her relationship and short marriage to Maje Ayida, and it has elicited the full range of reactions from supportive and sympathetic, to the dismissive. As usual, we have all the best [analysis] [for you]. NCC and the telcos When the news first broke that the NCC was raising the price floor for data services, it was thought that the [NCC were acting alone], but then it turned out that they were being egged on by the telcos. [Cue angry reaction]. The week’s other highlights Big changes could be about to happen in Gambia, as Yahaya Jammeh, who has ruled since 1994, [could concede defeat]in the elections. Shehu Sani has begun a fresh [war of words] with Governor El-Rufai. The world of football is mourning the deaths of a Brazilian football team who perished in a [plane crash] in Colombia. May their souls rest in peace. The marriage between Ahmed Indimi and Zahra Buhari has been [postponed] because of a tussle over dowry boxes, or rather, the recording of the delivery of the dowry boxes to the family. Badly behaved in-laws are not good. Here is [why] you are getting even less electricity than you are normally used to. Bolaji Abdullahi, who was Sports Minister under Goodluck Jonathan and has since decamped to the APC, is the new [National Publicity Secretary] of the party. The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Tunde Fowler, said that Nigerians will soon have to provide [evidence of tax payment] as well as pay VAT before obtaining their passports. The Federal Government wants to build a [1,000km pipeline] from Agadez in Niger Republic to Kaduna to import crude oil for the Kaduna refinery. OPEC’s first production cut in 8 years has seen [crude oil prices rise], which should be good for Nigeria. Thank you for reading, and don’t forget to share this newsletter if you like it.
