Buhari: Mark, can zis help me fight kwarapshan and reflate the economy?
Zuckerberg: We can program it to help you do that sir.
Buhari: Yawaaaa! *smiles*
A busy week for the Zuck
If Facebook were a country, it would be larger than China. So when the âPresidentâ of that âcountryâ â who also happens to be the worldâs 5th richest man â begins to move around the world, his every action is newsworthy.
After starting the week in Rome and [seeing Pope Francis], he ended the week in [Abuja] with the finale of Aso Villa Demo Day. In between, he was in Lagos and Nairobi to see the inspiring things being done by the tech communities in both cities, and unfortunately [lost a satellite] that was supposed to provide connectivity on the African continent.
The attention he brought with him will surely have benefits, and as usual, YNaija had you covered throughout the week with stories and analysis about [what his visit to Nigeria] â and Kenya, by extension â means.
Recession confirmed
On Wednesday, the National Bureau of Statistics confirmed that the country is in a recession. It was part of quite a bit of economic data released by the statistics bureau right at the end of August, and we have the main highlights [here].
No, Governor Ambode. No.
The optimism around Mark Zuckerbergâs visit to Lagos was quickly dampened when yesterday, Lagos state government officials demolished the premises of four businesses in Ikoyi. It upset us so much, that we did a [special editorial] about it.
After a steady stream of positive news from the Ambode administration, yesterday was a stark reminder about how far we still have to go in order to have a government that truly encourages enterprise in words and actions.
#JibrinWatch
Abdulmumin Jibrin called the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor [a bully] this week, and also [met with the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption], again, to restate his allegations. The House of Reps returns from recess in about 10 days. That should be a lot of fun.
The Media Blog
This week, TMB lamented the exit of the man who made [Pulse Nigeria popular], and is [disturbed] by the sensationalism of Premium Times in this interview with Ehiz.
Impact365
On Impact365 this week, we profiled twin brothers Tobias and Titus Igwe who are launching a project to create [20 million jobs in Nigeria in 10 years], and the [Hearts of Gold hospice], a care and management centre for children with mental and extreme physical disabilities which began its work in 2003.
Noteworthy events
BBOG are not letting up on their demand to have the Chibok Girls freed. They held a silent protest earlier this week. [Powerful stuff].
Buhari went to Osunâs commemoration of its 25th anniversary. [To commission a school]. LOL.
The Nigerian Ports Authority now [has a dress code]. Whoop! *rolls eyes*
By the time [this bill] in Kaduna passes, convicted child rapists there will get life in prison.
