[View this email in your browser] Good evening, The war on corruption In a democracy, corruption cannot be fought successfully without the legal system, and recent moves by the government show that they clearly understand this. Last week, the Presidential Advisory Council on Anti-Corruption engaged with lawyers under the Nigerian Bar Association’s umbrella. Today, the Nigerian Bench was the focus, and President Buhari gave a speech at the event, lamenting the frequent delays in court cases, as well as judicial corruption, which frustrates any attempts to take corruption cases to their logical conclusion. Read his full speech [here]. It’s not long. I promise. Fun fact: Of the 15 former governors charged with corruption since 2007, only one case has been concluded. ONE. Hopefully, these interactions lead to better outcomes. Tinubu vs Melaye (continued) The war of words – and blows almost – that started last week between both senators has escalated further. On Sunday, Dino Melaye took a picture of himself strutting up and down Bourdillon, close to Senator Tinubu’s residence, in an attempt to show he is not scared of her or Asiwaju. Dino also took to this Facebook page to list her [many ‘sins’]. However, he should count his [own sins first]. Senator Tinubu is not taking any chances with her safety, and [has written to the Inspector General] to provide her with police protection from Dino Melaye. She noted that the last person to get into a brawl with Dino lost his life. Ouch. Former IGP vs Current IGP The new IGP, Ibrahim Idris, alleged that his predecessor, Solomon Arase, took away 24 cars. Arase’s response was “What am I going to do with 24 cars? Do I want to open a car shop?”. Indeed. Here’s hoping this is resolved quickly. Arase Automobiles has a nice ring to it, however. Niger Delta should own 65% of oil wells After the first joint session between the Houses of Assembly in the eleven South-East and South-South states, they issued a call to federal government to allow the Niger Delta region [own 65% of oil wells.] This is not the first time such a call will be made, and it won’t be the last. However, the level of governance in those states is so bad that there is no evidence more resources will lead to better outcomes. Current AU President stays a little longer We have to wait a little longer for white smoke from the African Union’s headquarters. The AU’s leaders [could not agree on a successor] to the current President, so Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will stick around till January at the earliest. Niger Delta Avengers dismiss Sports Minister “The Niger Delta Avengers can’t stoop so low to send representatives to meet with a common Minister of Youths that doesn’t know his work” This is how the militant group [responded to claims] by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, that he met with some members of the group in Oporoza, Gbaramatu Kingdom. To be frank, it would be hard to take seriously a minister who wears a very odd red beret around, or someone whose handling of the Sports Ministry so far has been shoddy, to say the least. No complaints here. In other news… Iyanya may have left the nest, but his former manager Ubi Franklin is [now a dad], the father of a bouncing baby boy.
