It feels further back in time, but the land that gave us âÂÂamber waves of grainâ and fed a nation suffered a years-long drought beginning in 1930. During the Dust Bowl, winds picked up billions of tons of dry topsoil and blew dust storms across the country. While there were numerous factors that contributed to the Dust Bowl, you might be interested to learn that ocean currents were among them. Surprising, right? If you live near the ocean, youâÂÂve no doubt experienced how the water impacts the local climate. The fog in San Francisco is one famous example of how warmer ocean air can sometimes turn what might be winter snowstorms into mist and rain. [Image - San Fran]( Still, thatâÂÂs a long way from Oklahoma. WhatâÂÂs going on with the oceanâÂÂs reach? Ocean currents travel globally, absorbing and disbursing heat as they go. And while these currents move north, south, east, and west, they also move from shallow to deep and deep to shallow. The water temperatures change as the currents flow across the globe, impacting atmospheric pressure and wind patterns. Just as the famous El NinĂÂo and La NinĂÂa cycles impact weather across the globe, warmer waters in the North Atlantic are linked to droughts in the midwestern U.S., including the Dust Bowl. Want to dive a little deeper into ocean currents? Ride the waves of the Gulf Stream or adventure more than 11,000 feet deep into the Denmark Strait Cataract? Did you know that the salinity of the ocean also impacts the way that the water circulates? Salt water is denser than fresh water. As ocean water evaporates, the salt is left behind, making the water saltier and even more dense. Meanwhile, fresh water from rivers, rain, and melting ice flows back into the ocean. However, with warmer atmospheric temperatures and more fresh water melting into the ocean, the water density and circulation are shifting. As complex as these patterns are, it really does show how interconnected we are to the water and Earth. Speaking of the Weather Ocean currents arenâÂÂt the only factor impacting our weather. Solar activity is expected to be lower than normal through this current Solar Cycle. Historically, lower solar activity has meant cooler temperatures across Earth, although this connection isnâÂÂt as consistent as it once was. However, we could see a polar vortex in southern Canada and parts of the central and eastern U.S. this winter, due in part to the stratospheric winds along the equator. So, maybe it wouldnâÂÂt be such a bad idea to set sail on the East Australia current and spend our North American winter in the warm southern Pacific? What other distant factors play a role in your local weather? How do the frigid, salty waters 10,000 feet below the oceanâÂÂs surface change the summer weather in Colorado? Where else could the currents carry you? Let your imagination sail the seas while you learn all of this and more! [Image - San Fran]( ThereâÂÂs much more, too.
