Here’s what The Old Farmer’s Almanac says to expect where you live this winter. [Hero]( Dear Almanac Reader, Winter officially begins this year on Wednesday, December 21, at 4:48 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. At that time, the Sun reaches its greatest declination south of the celestial equator. And guess what? The Almanac is now regaling us with “A Tale of Two Winters” for the U.S.! For many places, The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting “bone-chilling cold and loads of snow.” Or you may wait for a winter that never seems to arrive. Most of the West from the Rockies to the Pacific can expect a wet winter with temperatures several degrees above normal. That’s the case for Alaska and Hawaii, too. Moving east from the Rockies to the Atlantic Ocean is a very different story. People in this part of the country should expect record-breaking cold and above-average precipitation. Unless you’re in the Deep South or southern portions of Texas, you may want to have your snow shovels ready! [Image - winter path]( The East Coast and Southern U.S. With the exception of parts of Maine, almost all of the Northeast, Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, and Florida can expect unusual cold and plenty of snow. Mid-January through February will bring the coldest temperatures, while the most snow will come from mid-December to mid-January in the Northeast and mid-January through February for other regions. There may even be snow into Georgia, with southern Georgia and Florida poised for rainier than normal conditions. The Deep South will be split between cold and snowy and cold and dry. Whether snowy or dry, you’re still looking at temperatures as much as 8 degrees below normal. The Midwest From the Great Lakes, through the Ohio Valley, across the Upper Midwest, and through the Heartland, it’s going to be cold and snowy. Most of these regions could see snow as early as November. Though it will still be cold, snowfall amounts should decrease as we move toward the western sections of the Heartland and Upper Midwest. West and Central U.S. Texas–Oklahoma will be split between cold and snowy and cold and dry. Either way, you’ll want to keep that wool sweater handy. Similarly, the High Plains will see a mix of cold and dry weather in most of Kansas and Nebraska, with conditions shifting to cold and snowy closer to Canada. The High Plains can expect above-average snowfall from mid-November through early February, while the best chances for snow in upper Texas and Oklahoma will be from mid-January into early February. [Image - sun]( West and Central U.S. Unlike the eastern portion of the country, regions in the western U.S. and along the Pacific Coast can expect lots of rain and temperatures several degrees higher than normal. Conditions in the Pacific Northwest should be dry while the Pacific Southwest, Desert Southwest, and Intermountian regions can expect wet conditions with snow in the higher elevations. Alaska and Hawaii As for Alaska and Hawaii, they’re both looking at mild, dry winters this year. The snowiest period in Alaska will be from early November to early February. In Hawaii, the stormiest days of winter will come in early and late November and then again in early March. [Shipping Now! Its weather forecasting methodology stems from a secret formula that was devised by its founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792. Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Notes about his formula are locked in a black box in the Almanac offices in Dublin, New Hampshire. Over the years, the formula has been refined and enhanced with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations.
