Keep those young minds and hands busy and learning with a trip to the garden. Having trouble viewing this email? [View this email on the web.]( [The Old Farmer's Almanac Gardening Club]( [Gardening Club]([Gardening With Kids]( Keep those young minds and hands busy and learning with a trip to the garden. [The Old Farmer's Almanac Gardening Club]( Dear Gardener, If there’s one universal thing we can say about kids, it’s that they’re curious. An afternoon of answering question after question is proof of that. But when you can channel that curiosity, you can create positive lifelong habits and quite a few good memories! That’s why we love getting little ones into the garden. A garden is a festival of sights, sounds, textures, and smells. From the buzzing of bees to the warmth of the soil, a garden is a nature lesson waiting to happen. Time in the garden is also good for mental health and physical well-being. Plus, you get delicious vegetables out of your efforts! If you want kids to eat vegetables, put something on their plate that they’ve grown. It’s guaranteed to work. Beware, though! You can’t give them a plastic shovel and a little corner of dirt to for pretending to garden. They want and need to be part of the real gardening. Don’t worry. We aren’t going to just throw you out there with no strategy. The 2022 Garden Guide includes more than a dozen activities that are fun for kids and adults. These aren’t the boring, busy-work tasks, either. You and your young gardening crew will learn how to attract different pollinators like bees and butterflies. There are projects to bring pest-eating songbirds to your garden. And, of course, there is the additional benefit of bonding with your kids. You’ll have to open up the 2022 Garden Guide to get all of these projects, but here’s a sneak peak. Grow a sunflower room. Kids love an adult-free hideaway, and sunflowers make the perfect clubhouse walls. Plant two or three rows of sunflower seeds for the walls, leaving plenty of space in the center as well as an opening on one side. Water and fertilize your sunflowers, and once they have some leaves, mulch the area to keep out weeds. Though sunflowers can take 70 to 80 days or so to reach maturity, they’ll reach “wall” height much sooner. Make a sip station for butterflies. On a hot day, butterflies need water. Place some smooth stones and gravel in a saucer. Add enough water to wet but not cover the stones. Butterflies will perch on the stones and sip the water. Then they’ll help pollinate your garden! Make mud pies. Will they help your garden grow? Maybe not. But they sure can be fun! There’s more. But… you’ll have to grab the 2022 Garden Guide to read them. It’s all in the 2022 Garden Guide, which is yours as part of your membership in the Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club. You also get 8 years of digital Garden Guides, which means you have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 pages of enlightening gardening tips, design ideas, delicious recipes, garden folklore, and more. It’s all at your fingertips with your membership in the Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club. [Image - Bug Mosaic]( [Befriend the Little Things That Run the World]( The majority of Earth’s animal species are insects and other invertebrates, as well as the insectivores that eat them. They’re also crucial to our existence. Insect pollinators are responsible for 80 percent of all plants on Earth. One easy way to help out these “little things” is to grow native plants. Bringing native plants to our landscapes provides essential energy for species-rich food webs. Best of all, you don’t need to be a biologist or trained ecologist to create a habitat designed to attract birds, butterflies, beetles, and bees. Nor do you need a large plot of land. Read the full story in the 2022 Garden Guide and find out what you can do to turn your yard and garden into an oasis for the variety of wildlife in your area. It’s all part of the all-inclusive package you get with your Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club membership! [Image - tri-colored bed]( [Growing Anew in 2022]( What else is going on in the lives of gardeners this year? This compact calendar is the perfect size to fit on the wall in your kitchen, den, or potting shed. Each month features rich, full-color illustrations along with tips, history, or background information on the artwork. Here are just a few of the types of tips you can find in our 2022 Gardening Calendar: - If you like your asparagus more on the sweet side, cover the growing green spears with black plastic or bury them in soil or hay. The covering keeps chlorophyll from developing, giving you a harvest of sweet, white spears. - You can’t eat its fruit, but you can grow one species of banana tree for its lush foliage as far north as Zone 4. It can grow as high as 18 feet tall! - For a pet-safe garden, try planting pansies. They’re safe for dogs, and delicious in salads! - Ants can be your partner in pest control. They love the nectar on peonies, and will drive away other insects while they’re foraging for food. Be sure to rinse blossoms before you bring them inside for a bouquet. - For seedling success, transplant your young plants on overcast days or in the evening. - Parsnips love a cold snap. Harvest your parsnips after a hard frost. That helps the plant convert its starches to sugars, making your parsnips sweeter. - If your compost pile smells like ammonia, try adding shredded leaves or straw. You’ll love the advice, folklore, and gardening secrets in our 2022 Gardening Wall Calendar! As you count the days until your next planting or your next harvest, peruse the pages of Gardening for Everyone for tips on how to grow better, naturally! From the practical to the ornamental, plan your prolific garden and learn how to: - Plant edibles indoors and out, no matter how small your space is. - Create a serene and leafy oasis—and why you should. - Make a living herb wreath—a kitchen garden in the round. - Grow blooms that beautify your surroundings and make breathtaking bouquets. - Serve up your harvest in style with recipes that will let you savor the flavor of homegrown food.
