Get more than bulbs. Join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club and years of garlicky wisdom and tales are all yours. Having trouble viewing this email? [View this email on the web.]( [The Old Farmer's Almanac, Founded in 1792] [Garlic!]( Get more than bulbs. Join The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club and years of garlicky wisdom and tales are all yours. [The Old Farmer's Almanac Gardening Club]( Dear Garlic Lover, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” So wrote William Shakespeare in the early 1600s. Literary critics the world over will tell you this is an ode to beauty and love and youth, but I’m going to let you in on a secret: it’s about garlic. Now, that may or may not be 100% true, but it certainly should be. Is there anything more fair, more exciting than those first, fresh bulbs of garlic in late spring? I think not! Here at The Old Farmer’s Almanac, we have a long history (well over two centuries!) of appreciation for all things weather and garden related. And ever since we went digital, we’ve had the distinct pleasure of getting to share more and more of that history with you in our library. This isn’t just blast-from-the-past type stuff either. The great thing about history, as it relates to gardening, is that the information never really goes out of date. Heck, even gardening tools haven’t changed all that much over generations. That’s where garlic comes into the picture. How? Well, in this case, it’s just one example of the information and entertaining stories you can enjoy in our library as a Gardening Club Member. For example, a recent article explores the healing powers of garlic. You can go back to 2016 to learn about making garlic powder, or visit 2017 to discover which other plants garlic is (and is not) good with in the garden. What’s really special, though, are the Gardening Guides. These colorful library treasures are filled with gardening tips, advice, and ideas. You can learn about garden design, trends in gardening, landscaping, and get expert information on ornamental plants, like orchids. And, naturally, garlic! When you join [The Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club](, you get the entire library at your fingertips! [Ruminations on Garlic]( An article in our 2014 Gardening Guide explores “one man’s experience with growing garlic.” If you’ve never been privy to someone expounding on the aroma and taste of a specific variety of garlic, you’re missing out. The excitement is contagious! “Out there now, under the snow, mulch, and soil, is the next regiment of 100 planted cloves, mostly the veteran ‘Fish Lake’ but also new recruits highly regarded for their sublime flavor. ‘Red Toch’ is an artichoke-class softneck from the Republic of Georgia, and there is also ‘French Rocambole,’ a hardneck.” “However, the prize September planting was a precious eight cloves of scarce ‘Rose de Lautrec,’ a rare, famous, and flavorful weakly bolting-class hardneck pink garlic from France.” As you would expect, the article includes plenty of planting tips, as well as sourcing information. And if for some reason you don’t like the idea of planting garlic… [The Old Farmer's Almanac Gardening Club]( [H]([omegrown Berries]( That same 2014 Gardening Guide gets into the brambles, quite literally. Fruits belonging to the Rubus genus produce thorny stems, but they also give us raspberries and blackberries. Incidentally, raspberries aren’t all red. There are purple, yellow, and black raspberries, too. Plant them right, and you could have fresh berries all season long. There are winter-hardy “Jewel,” or late-season “Brandywine” varieties. The everbearing “Anne” produces fruit in the first year in early summer, then again in the fall. As for blackberries, they’re less cold-tolerant than raspberries, but there are still a number of varieties that will give you late season fruits perfect for pies. Of course, you can go almost anywhere to learn how to plant raspberries and blackberries. But those sources probably won’t tell you that creeping under a bramble three times will cure boils, or that the first wild blackberry each year will cure warts. It’s true – at least according to old English folklore. There’s lots more to share about these precious fruits. And all you need to do to enjoy it is join us! Mix the seeds with sand for better spreading. - Plants with a strong citrus fragrance will help to keep pesky bugs at bay. Try planting lemon-scented geraniums, lemon thyme, or lemon balm. - Lettuce shaded naturally or by shade cloth will encourage the growth of a tender, sweet crop all summer. - To attract dragonflies, create a water feature. Choose a spot in partial to full sun and plant a few native plants along the edges for wind protection. - Remove the lower leaves of brussels sprouts to expose the buds along the stem. Harvest from the bottom up. - Fill bird feeders to attract chickadees, nuthatches, and juncos—they will not only brighten the landscape but also clean up insect larvae and eggs on trees and shrubs.
