The Old Farmer?s Almanac predicts the weather for this February based on our time-tested formula.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts the weather for this February based on our time-tested formula. Having trouble viewing this email? [View this email on the web.]( [The Weather in February]( Is it already summer? The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a warmer-than-normal February for most of the country, but this doesn’t mean that you can put away the snow boots. Dear Weather Watcher, 28 or 29? How many days does February have? 2020 is a leap year, meaning that February has 29 days. Why the extra day? Earth takes about 365.25 days to orbit the Sun. Since our calendar doesn’t divide days into quarters, it gradually drifts out of alignment with the solar year. Adding a day every 4 years brings us back into sync with the solar system. Without leap years, our calendar seasons would be off by 25 days every 100 years. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, this means that February and March would be closer to New Year’s! New Year’s or not, this February might feel like summer to some of you. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting temperatures above average for almost the entire country. Expect temperatures to be 1 or 2 degrees above average in the Northeast, Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Southeast, Florida, Lower Lakes, Deep South, parts of the Upper Midwest, and Intermountain regions. Despite the warmer temperatures, you can still expect snow at least through mid-February as far south as the Appalachians and parts of the Southeast, as well as in the northern areas of the Texas–Oklahoma region and even higher elevations of the Desert Southwest. If you’re in the northern High Plains or Intermountain regions, watch for higher-than-normal snowfall amounts. Parts of the Ohio Valley and Lower Lakes regions can also expect more snow than usual. And Hawaii? We’re kidding. You can get more detailed forecasts in The Old Farmer’s Almanac—America’s oldest and most popular almanac. We use a unique, age-old formula that’s traditionally 80% accurate. Our weather forecasts methodology stems from a secret formula that was devised by our founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792. Thomas believed that weather on Earth was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Notes about his formula are locked in a black box in our offices in Dublin, New Hampshire. Over the years, we have refined and enhanced this formula with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations. For example, our overall accuracy rate in forecasting the direction of temperature change from normal for the 2018–2019 winter was 88.9%. It was also called the Bone Moon or Hunger Moon because hunting was difficult and food could be hard to come by. If you’d like to see this month’s full Moon, head outside at 2:34 A.M. EST on February 9. If you’re not a night owl but would still like to look to the Moon for guidance, you can plan certain activities based on the best days according to the Moon’s sign and phase. For instance, if you’re planning to advertise to sell something this month, the 5th and 6th are your best days. The 7th and 8th are the best days to move, and the 11th and 12th are your best days this month if you want to travel for pleasure. Camping? Fishing? Washing windows? We’d love to tell you more because the Moon can reveal the best days for all of those activities, but if you want more specifics, you’ll need to get an [Old Farmer’s Almanac Weather Club Charter Membership](! [Did You Know?]( February’s birthstone is the amethyst. Amethysts are a type of quartz often found in geodes amidst cooled lava. Their purple coloring can range from reddish purple to bluish lilac. The amethyst is said to strengthen relationships and give courage to its wearer. Ancient Greeks thought that amethyst could guard against intoxication, and Italian Renaissance scientist Leonardo da Vinci believed that wearing the gem could increase intelligence.
