[View this email on the web.]( [Engage More in 2020]( Keep your days in order and order in your days (and learn some cool trivia) with The Old Farmer’s Almanac Engagement Calendar. Dear Busy Bee, What’s on your calendar for the rest of the year? If you walked through our offices, you’d find that every desk has an open Old Farmer’s Almanac Engagement Calendar with all manner of scribbles and notes. Meetings, appointments, deadlines, and vacations are there for each month of the year. No doubt those calendars save us from turning into a comically late bunch of people. They also amuse us with fun facts that we can’t squeeze into the Almanac. Speaking of vacations and fun facts, those of us here in New England often head to that salty wonder of nature, the Atlantic Ocean, for rest and relaxation. Although we are less inclined to get into the water outside of summer and early fall, the mesmerizing waves and clean air always astound. Just watch out for the great white shark! Sign me up now!]( [What’s So Great About the Great White Shark?]( The great white looms large in the imagination of New Englanders. It’s the world’s largest predatory fish, capable of growing more than 20 feet long and weighing up to 5,000 pounds. It has 50 working teeth (and 250 more developing). It’s safe to say that this is not something that you want to bump into while you’re frollicking in the waves. There is good news, though. The great white rarely attacks humans, and on the rare occasion when they do bite, they bite only once, finding humans too bony to enjoy. There’s something else that you should know about their eating habits before you get in the water, though—but you’ll have to read it in this year’s Engagement Calendar. (Hint: Look in the month of August.) [What’s So Great About the Great Salt Lake?]( Moving “greatly” inland, and far, far away from any sharks, you’ll find the Great Salt Lake, which is the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. Every year, more than 2 million tons of salt flow into the lake from three tributary rivers, but since there’s no outlet, the salt stays there when the water evaporates. Interestingly, the size of the lake varies from year to year. For instance, in 1963, the lake covered 937 square miles, and in 1986, it covered 2,300 square miles. It’s not necessarily a tranquil blue lake, either. Parts of the lake are a surprising color. Look through the March trivia to find out what color. [What’s So Great About the “Great One,” Wayne Gretzky?]( As we move from oceans to lakes to “dry” land (or at least solid water), did you know that the famous hockey player Wayne Gretzky got his nickname “The Great One” from a sportswriter when he was 10 years old? He scored 378 goals and had 139 assists in one season. Then, in the NHL, Gretzky won eight straight Hart Trophies as the league’s Most Valuable Player. When did this all begin? He was at his grandfather’s farm in Ontario the first time he skated on ice. You won’t believe how young he was! Take a guess and then find the answer on the January page of The Old Farmer’s Almanac Engagement Calendar. Will this be a cold winter? Find out how your cat can tell you what to expect. Do you know when the Great Seal of the United States first appeared on the one-dollar bill? Why is thunder in September good? You can find the answers to all of this, plus more folklore, tips, and trivia, in the 2020 Engagement Calendar. It’s included with an [Old Farmer’s Almanac Calendar Club Charter Membership](!
