Here’s how to do it successfully.]( [Hero]( Photo Credit: Shutterstock Dear Reader, Look beyond the hype, the comedies, and the occasional stigma, and it turns out that Cannabis is just another plant. It also happens to be a very useful plant. Cannabis aka marijuana, aka weed has a long history of medicinal and recreational usage, as well as more industrial applications. The Cannabis plant is used to make everything from rope to clothing to paper to fuel. Until recently, none of this mattered. It was illegal to grow or even possess cannabis in the U.S. and Canada. As attitudes and laws have changed, though, people across Canada and in many U.S. states are now able to cultivate this flowering herb. [IMG - UV]( Photo Credit: Shutterstock There are differing legalities to consider before growing your own cannabis. Some states allow residents to grow cannabis only for medicinal uses. Others allow for both recreational and medicinal cultivation. And, in some states, it’s still not legal. There are also restrictions on quantity, visibility, and other factors. In other words, if you’re interested in growing cannabis, it’s important to check your local regulations before you get started. And if everything checks out? Cannabis is relatively easy to grow, but there are some tricks to growing and harvesting it if you want a quality end product. [IMG - Buds]( Photo Credit: Shutterstock Soil, fertilization, lighting, timing, and pruning are all essential steps in producing good plants. The real challenge comes when it’s time to harvest and dry the flowers. You can destroy your high-quality cannabis in the last few steps by drying it too quickly or failing to provide adequate ventilation. Drying the plant generally takes anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks. The curing process then lasts another 3 to 8 weeks. It’s a challenge, for sure. But be patient. The rewards are great.
