No matter what you grow, there’s so much joy to be had in its smells, sounds, and tastes. There’s magic in watching a seedling grow into a tall, sturdy tomato plant that produces pounds of delicious fruit. Root vegetables are equally fascinating, hiding their bounty under the ground and waiting to surprise us with pungent onions, sweet beets, or spicy radishes. What’s great about a garden, though, is that anyone can grow one. It’s true that many gardens are large, but you don’t need to have an expansive space to experience the joys of gardening. [Image - Balcony]( Gardens with mini-vegetables are perfect for folks with a limited-space location such as a balcony or new gardeners exploring the excitement of growing. These “container crops” are bred especially for their smaller stature. Make no mistake, though: These vegetables might be small in size, but they pack plenty of flavor! Love cucumbers? ‘Pick-A-Bushel’ is an All-America Selections winner with a small footprint and crunchy little fruit that are ready to harvest in just 50 days. Smaller varieties of carrots such as ‘Minicore’ or ‘Bambino’ grow to only about 4 inches long, making them ideal for containers. Even some squashes—usually notorious for long, meandering vines—are bred for compact spaces. For example, ‘Reno’ acorn squash is only around 5 inches across and weighs about 1½ pounds. That's right! Gardening Club members can browse Garden Guides going back to 2014 in our online library! You can read about everything from garden gnomes (including the original “human” gnomes) to perfect perennials to garden planning. Since we’ve covered small outdoor gardens, let’s bring the process completely indoors. There’s nothing new about enjoying some green in your home. Foliage plants have been lurking in the dark corners for a while. What if you’re ready to step things up a bit? How about planting trees in your living room? Believe it or not, this isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. The right species of palm, cypress, pine, banana, and many other trees can live happily in an overheated apartment or a chilly farmhouse. They can even forgive a certain amount of neglect, although they do respond very positively to a little nurturing. Want to learn more?
