It’s a huge order. And a sign that customers increasingly want to rent electric vehicles. That assumes that Hertz will replace gasoline powered cars and trucks with new EVs. Hertz has already been purchasing the Tesla Model 3. And plans to add 100,000 Tesla EVs by the end of 2022. The deal would be worth $4 billion – based upon the current price of a Model 3. Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded on Twitter… “I’d like to emphasize that no contract has been signed yet.” There’s been some dispute regarding what Musk really means… He’s simply saying that Hertz doesn’t have a purchase agreement in place with Tesla. That means that Hertz is buying cars from Tesla just like anyone else. The company gets no preferential treatment in terms of delivery or discounts. It’s possible that Tesla and Hertz will formalize a purchase agreement in the future. Shares of Tesla and Hertz surged on the news. And Tesla’s market cap soared above $1 trillion for the very first time.
