They can reach 20 feet long and weigh over 4,000 pounds. Threats Great white shark numbers are decreasing. After being hunted for years for their fins and teeth these sharks are now rare. They are often accidentally caught by commercial fisheries and deliberately caught as a trophy in sportfishing. Great white sharks get their name from their white underside. Elsewhere, their torpedo-shaped bodies are dark gray to brown. Their 300 teeth are broad, triangular, and serrated. Females give birth to live young, called pups, which are three to four feet long.
