By leveraging its purchasing power, [New York can lead the way in halting the loss of tropical forests and supporting responsible businesses](. This groundbreaking bill nearly became law last year after passing both chambers of the New York State Legislature with bipartisan support. Governor Kathy Hochul ultimately vetoed the bill, but now we have another opportunity to get this done. The bill's benefits go far beyond the environment. This effort would help the state invest directly in businesses free from tropical deforestation, including New York's small, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses. It would also foster a responsible private sector and support New York’s agricultural sector and rural counties that produce beef, timber, and soybeans.
