Here are the books that we enjoyed reading last month... January 2024 Books of the Month Dear Reader Even though we publish digitally, we absolutely love books! Here's our monthly selection of books that our editorial team has reviewed. [Lost Cities of the Ancient World]( "Lost Cities of the Ancient World" by Philip ‘Maty’ Matyszak is a wonderful book full of incredible imagery-accompanying short chapters, each focusing on a different city that was, in some way or another, lost. Whether it be submerged, covered in sand, or simply forgotten in the public consciousness over time, this book looks at those once-flourishing cities from across Europe, the Near East, and Asia to reintroduce them to readers in an enjoyable and accessible way. [Read full review]( [Nero: Emperor and Court]( The author presents a new Nero different from the Roman emperor's image in traditional sources and modern popular depictions. John Drinkwater argues that Nero is not as villainous as many have portrayed him. Instead, Nero's closest family members and associates were also responsible for his actions. "Nero: Emperor and Court" is for serious scholars and students of Classics and History. [Read full review]( [The Slavic Myths]( 'The Slavic Myths' by Noah Charney and Svetlana Slapšak is a book comprising seven new retellings of Slavic myths each accompanied by an academic analysis of the myth and its history. This book is an accessible introduction to Slavic mythology and connects tales of both popular and lesser-known creatures today, such as vampires, werewolves, Perun, Vasilissa, and Baba Yaga, to their foundations within Slavic mythology. [Read full review]( [The Rise of the Seleukid Empire (323-223 BC): Seleukos I to Seleukos III]( I'd recommend this for scholars and historians. It's an excellent resource for details surrounding the establishment and foundation of the Seleukid Empire. The subject is interesting, but some prior knowledge of the main political players after Alexander the Great's death is helpful. [Read full review]( [Christ's Samurai: The True Story of the Shimabara Rebellion]( Written for all readers, "Christ’s Samurai" introduces and elaborates upon the events that transpired during the Shimabara Rebellion, a relatively unknown piece of history and the catalyst event for the tightening of restrictions upon the spread of Christianity, leading to the inception of the "hidden Christian."
