Here are the books that we enjoyed reading last month... October 2023 Books of the Month Dear Reader Even though we publish digitally, we absolutely love books! Here's our monthly selection of books that our editorial team has reviewed. [The World of Sugar: How the Sweet Stuff Transformed Our Politics, Health, and Environment over 2,000 Years]( How sugar - which had been unknown for much of human history - became a pervasive element in our lives only in recent times is the subject matter of Ulbe Bosma’s magisterial work "The World of Sugar." The rise of sugar from relative obscurity, the author argues, has been achieved at the expense of slavery, environmental degradation, and human well-being. Extensively researched, this work should be an engaging read for both scholars and general readers. [Read full review]( [Conversations with the High Priest of Coosa]( Hudson’s book, although published 20 years ago, remains a foundational and innovative work on Native American Studies. This book defies the boundaries of traditional historical academic writing and engages the audience through creative storytelling. Readers, either scholars or history enthusiasts, will learn from both Hudson’s expansive knowledge on the topic and his methodology behind writing this book. [Read full review]( [Etruscan Civilization: A Cultural History]( Sybille Haynes has here produced a comprehensive chronological study of the Etruscans which fills many gaps in the available literature on Italy's first great civilization. Its depth and scope combined with hundreds of images will relegate all other works on this topic to a quiet life at the back of the bookshelf. [Read full review]( [The Good Kings: Absolute Power in Ancient Egypt and the Modern World]( "The Good Kings," by UCLA Professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture Kara Cooney, is a rare history book that speaks not only of the past but how two seemingly distant and disparate eras - ancient Egypt and the modern world - are more similar than what we might admit. Written for the general audience who is aware of what is happening in society today and not afraid to have their ideals challenged, this book explores five infamous pharaohs - and their modern-day counterparts. [Read full review]( [Philip II of Macedonia]( Philip II of Macedonia, by Ian Worthington, is a biography of Philip II, king of ancient Macedon from 360 to 336 BCE. Philip’s story is that of a brilliant leader, who turned Macedon into a regional superpower, paving the way for his son, Alexander Great, and his subsequent conquest of the Persian Empire. Written in a simple and accessible style, Worthington outlines a compelling picture of the life and legacy of the Macedonian ruler.
