I have heard a lot of moving animal stories in my twenty-year career in the animal advocacy space, but I just can’t shake the story of Cam the bear from my heart. You see, Cam is what is known to the industry as a "bear bile" bear. He was trapped in captivity for the entirety of his life—all six years—when our team finally met him. For 2,190 days, Cam remained stuck behind cold, metal bars in a cage that measured just 3ft x 4ft. But his pain didn’t stop there. Cam was also put through the horror of having his gallbladder bile tapped. His bile was regularly harvested to be sold as part of the billion-dollar bear bile trade. Cam’s life was an excruciating cycle of boredom, stress and agony. On the day of his rescue, we knew we had to move quickly. His current state was worrying, and his health severely impacted from his daily abuse. And then, I will never forget what happened next. When our team members arrived, Cam looked them in the eyes with utter exhaustion and defeat and slowly reached his paw through the bars of his cage to meet the palm of one of our team member's outstretched hands. We don’t need words to communicate with animals. We know when they are hurting, sad, and need our help just by looking at them. And that day, Cam told us he needed help. He told us that he needed to be free from the bars that confined him, and he reached out his paw to show us that he trusted us to save him from his fate.
