Hi, everyoneâIâm Liz, the editor-in-chief of Womenâs Health. Last weekend, I flew from NYC to my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, with my two young sons, Charlie and George. We were there to witness a seminal moment in sports history: the opening of the first stadium in the WORLD built for women. On Saturday, the KC Current beat the Portland Thorns FC, 5-4, at the brand-new, $200 million CPKC Stadium. Watching my boys proudly wear their fan gear, and cheer their hearts out for the female players, gave me the best, happiest feels. Near the sideline in the second half of the game, I spent time with the 85ers, the first womenâs U.S. national team. I asked Michelle Akers, the star forward from that squad, to share what this meant to her. (To put things in perspective on how far things have come: She and her teammates had to sew USA logos on the menâs hand-me-down practice jerseys they were given as uniforms for their first tournament in Italy.) âThis feels like coming home to my sisters, who are completely inspiring, motivating, and crazy badasses,â she told me over the roaring of the crowd. Akers added that she didnât anticipate this unprecedented moment in womenâs sports happening in her lifetime, and it seemed to me that she was processing its magnitude in real time. In an exclusive feature on WomensHealthMag.com, I go deep on what the huge investment in CPKC Stadium means for the world. In the story, youâll hear from some of the teamâs owners (one of whom is Brittany Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes), plus several players and female executives. Together, they unpack the financial upside and emotional impact of this historic momentâ¦and what it will all mean for the next generation of kids.
