Plus: What's going on with NYC's ongoing migrant crisis. [FORWARD TO A FRIEND]( [VIEW IN BROWSER]( [DONATE]( [WNYC Politics Brief] [It's time for State of the State addresses]( Governor Kathy Hochul is set to give her State of the State address later today, and issues like crime and mental health will be the focus of her speech. But the governor will also touch on other projects and legislation expected in the coming year, including [plans for a floating pool]( headed to New York City’s waterways. At a preview of her State of the State address last week, Hochul said she wants to [expand the state’s family leave policy]( for pregnant people to include 40 hours of paid time off for prenatal appointments. If the proposal goes through, it would make New York the first state in the country with such a policy. Hochul is also slated to announce her support of a new plan to [extend the Second Avenue subway to West Harlem]( a measure that would mean building an additional three stations to help bring the line across Manhattan to Broadway. Over in New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy will also be giving his State of the State address where he will likely announce plans to give 16- and 17-year-olds the [right to vote in school board elections]( statewide. --------------------------------------------------------------- 🗳️ --------------------------------------------------------------- More politics stories to know this week What’s happening with the ongoing migrant crisis New York City started enforcing its 60-day shelter limit for migrant families with children this week. The first round of moves happened today with 40 families at the Row Hotel forced to either reapply for housing or seek shelter elsewhere. [Read more.]( The city may be setting limits on shelter stays, but a new poll from HarrisX found that 80% of New York City residents support the right-to-shelter mandate requiring the city to provide shelter to anyone in need. [Read more.]( Mayor Eric Adams is also working to restrict bus companies from transporting migrants to the city, and [asking nearby municipalities to do the same]( prompting [different responses from New Jersey mayors](. His administration also filed a lawsuit against 17 bus companies last week seeking to recover millions in migrant costs incurred over the last two years. [Read more.]( What else is going on in City Hall Several New York City councilmembers joined mental health consumers and advocates at a rally outside City Hall last week to urge the Adams administration to reverse course on a plan that could force some of the city's mental health clubhouses to close. [Read more.]( More than two dozen councilmembers also banded together last week in a letter calling on the state Board of Elections to withhold Donald Trump’s name from the state’s 2024 presidential primary and general election ballots. [Read more.]( What else Albany is working on Supporters of Kyra’s Law, a bill that would reshape child custody decisions in New York by requiring judges to consider a parent’s overall history of abuse or neglect, are rallying behind a renewed fight to pass it as the state Legislature reconvenes this month. [Read more.]( What’s ahead for New Jersey New Jersey lawmakers passed legislation yesterday to fund community crisis teams in several cities around the state. The response team would be an alternative to police-led intervention when someone suffering a mental health episode calls for help.
