It’s Thursday morning in New York City and the Biden administration announced last night that the U.S. would [make roughly 472,000 Venezuelan migrants eligible to receive work permits.]( In New York City alone, there are tens of thousands of migrants from Venezuela who will now receive protection from deportation and the chance to legally work in the country. The move comes after months of pleas from both Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams who have been asking President Joe Biden to expand the designation and allow work permits for migrants. Here’s what else is going on: - The NYPD has made more than 1 million traffic stops since Mayor Eric Adams took office last year, [a new report from the New York Civil Liberties Union shows]( and a disproportionate amount of the drivers pulled over were Black or Latino at nearly 90%. - Members of the Rutgers University Senate are [considering a vote of no confidence against school President Jonathan Holloway]( just three years into his term as the school’s first Black president. The Senate cited Holloway’s dismissal of the tradition of shared governance in a resolution obtained by Gothamist. - MTA Chair Janno Lieber said Wednesday that the agency is already [prepared for additional commuters after its congestion pricing program goes into effect]( next year since subways and buses aren’t even full, as it's still recovering from pandemic losses. - Join journalist and Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep as he [discusses his new book "Differ We Must: How Lincoln Succeeded in a Divided America"]( with WNYC host Michael Hill.
