Also, the city's first Latin Night Market is coming to Inwood. [View this email in a browser.]( Gothamist relies on your support to make local news available to all. Not yet a member? [Consider donating and join today.]( [Mayor Adams and Gov. Hochul call the migrant influx ‘unprecedented’ – historians disagree]( [first image]( [Today's newsletter curated by Emily Nadal]( Weather: ☀️ Summer is really making a grand exit with this perfect weather today. Expect clear, sunny skies and a cool high of 73 degrees. It’s Tuesday morning in New York City and even though our leaders call the migrant crisis in the city “unprecedented,” [it’s not something we haven’t experienced before.]( Gothamist spoke with scholars and reviewed immigration data from the 19th century and found that the current migrant situation isn’t all that unusual. Back in 1907, for example, Ellis Island processed 100,000 immigrants in just a single month, the same amount of migrants Mayor Eric Adams says have entered the city’s care since last year. So, while the situation may not be new for New York, there are some differences between past influxes and now, like the fact that the city now has a right to shelter to law, and that many recent migrants were specifically sent on buses from the southern border to New York by Republican governors as a political message. Unremarkable or not, there’s been a lot of finger pointing and difference of opinion between our elected officials over the past year about how the city has handled the all the new arrivals, and what to do about it. With all the developments, WNYC’s "All Things Considered" host Tiffany Hanssen spoke with Arun Venugopal, a senior reporter for WNYC’s Race and Justice Unit, [about what it all means and where we’re headed.]( Here’s what else is happening: - The city’s first Latin Night Market is [coming to Dyckman Street in Inwood this Friday]( with live music, dance performances, and food from the Latin American and Hispanic diaspora. - A 22-year-old Long Island man who would [use his thousands of social media followers to blackmail underage girls]( was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for distributing child pornography and cyber-bullying a 12-year-old girl to the point where she tried to commit suicide. - The Bronx day care center where a 1-year-old boy died and several other children were hospitalized from apparent opioid exposure [passed several city and state health inspections]( which did not include background checks on everyone living at the home-based daycare or a check for fentanyl. - Vassar College in Poughkeepsie is known as one of the first higher learning institutions for women in the country, yet a [new lawsuit claims the school systemically paid female professors less than their male counterparts.]( - A 21-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection with the [fatal shooting of 71-year-old Enriqueta Rivera last week]( who was hit by a stray bullet on a Bronx street. - OMNY, the MTA’s tap-to-pay system for subways and buses, [is most used in gentrified neighborhoods]( according to MTA data. The station with the highest uptake of OMNY is the L train station at Bedford Avenue in the heart of Williamsburg. - An unlicensed Flushing acupuncturist was [charged in Queens Supreme Court with assault, reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession]( after his treatment allegedly caused a woman’s lung to collapse. - People who hold NYPD placards are notorious for parking on sidewalks, mostly in front of precincts, hindering pedestrians from passing safely. But after four decades, [one Brooklyn middle school got them to stop doing it in front of their building](. - The mayor of Prospect Park, New Jersey is [one of 12 plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the federal government]( seeking to end the use of a secret watchlist they say almost exclusively targets Muslims for scrutiny when they travel. - Bally’s casino is [launching a free shuttle bus service in the Bronx beginning Oct. 1]( which will run on a loop about every 30 minutes shuffling riders between the casino and various commercial corridors in the borough. - The service comes following the news that Former President [Donald Trump transferred his lease of a Bronx golf course]( to the casino operator earlier this month. - A Pennsylvania man was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport over the weekend for [trying to bring a loaded handgun onto his flight]( amid an increase of such incidents at New York’s three major area airports so far this year, TSA officials said. - If you haven't had a chance to check out the Jay-Z exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library, you still have time! [“The Book of Hov” display was extended to December 4th.]( - City Comptroller Brad Lander said his office will [conduct a “real-time audit” into a controversial, $432 million, no-bid-contract]( with the firm DocGo to provide services to migrants in the city, and may revoke the Adams administration’s authority to quickly enter into emergency contracts for migrant care. - Ice Spice’s pumpkin spice Munchkin drink at Dunkin' is [coming for McDonald’s Grimace shake’s unofficial title]( of being the most sought after frozen fast food drink concoction this year. “Certainly the idea of immigrants arriving in large numbers to New York, that’s a story as old as the city in the context of the country’s history." - Alan Kraut, a historian with the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, [ON WHETHER THE CURRENT MIGRANT CRISIS IS REALLY UNPRECEDENTED.]( More from Gothamist [second image]( [It’s taking NYC over a year to fix up vacant public housing units, report shows]( The New York City Housing Authority is taking more than a year on average to repair and rent out empty units, according to the annual mayor’s management report.
