A new map allows you to [see just how much shade the trees in your neighborhood provide.]( The research by Cornell University finds that New York City shade is limited and relatively low-quality. Here’s what else is happening: - The city’s comptroller wants the Department of Social Services to [ramp up a program that moves homeless New Yorkers off the streets]( and into apartments while focusing on “long-time stayers” who’ve been stuck in the shelter system for years. - A five-alarm fire in Brooklyn Sunday [destroyed several businesses and injured firefighters]( and an EMS responder. - Another fire at a Queens apartment building Friday night [killed one person and injured four others]( including a 1-year-old child. - Speaking of tree shade, the hottest neighborhood in Manhattan (temperature wise) was found to be Washington Heights which is [over 90% hard surface and only 3% vegetation.]( - With enough space for up to 3,000 new arrivals, the city’s largest migrant relief center [opened Sunday on Randall’s Island.]( - NYC’s rat population increased by roughly 50% since 2010, [from an estimated 2 million 13 years ago to 3 million now]( according to an analysis by M&M Pest Control. - A 29-year-old woman was arrested after she fled the scene of one Midtown car crash, where she [injured seven pedestrians, and then got into a second car crash]( in Queens. - Two other people were arrested in connection with a Friday [car crash at a dangerous Brooklyn intersection]( that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman. - A judge ordered three New Jersey school boards to [not notify parents if their children display signs of changing gender expression or identity]( as the state said the alerts would discriminate against transgender students. - Avid swimmers at Brooklyn beaches took matters into their own hands to [try to prevent jet skiers from running over people]( in the water by using a loophole on buoys to install their own. - Over in New Jersey waters, a humpback whale found dead on the Jersey Shore was [likely killed after hitting a ship or boat,]( an analysis showed. - Also at the beach: a wallaby? The NYPD [confiscated a wallaby from a person at the Coney Island boardwalk]( Friday night.
