It’s Tuesday morning in New York City where concertgoers are [demanding action from city officials and a Brooklyn venue after three disturbing incidents]( happened over the course of six weeks this summer. Two men were found dead near the Brooklyn Mirage in East Williamsburg, and another person was allegedly kidnapped after getting into a taxi outside the event space. Now, patrons have waged a letter-writing and online campaign calling for changes. Here’s what else is happening: - A [construction boom fell on top]( of a Manhattan MTA bus Monday night, injuring several people. - Environmentalists are [questioning NYC’s decision]( to allow residents to put their yard waste on the curb in clear plastic bags as they say the move undermines the spirit of the program. - One person is dead and several others were injured after a fire [erupted at a Brownsville apartment building]( yesterday afternoon. - The heat is still bumping outside and yet it’s only going to get worse, according to NASA, who says we should [expect an even hotter 2024.]( - The city awarded an [$18 million no-bid contract]( to a Florida-based company that will provide emergency shower trailers for migrants in New York after weeks of complaints from immigrant rights activists and elected officials about the lack of showers at shelters. - Nestle issued a voluntary recall of their Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough “break and bake” Bar because of [potential wood pieces in the dough.]( - In a truly wild change of narrative that what was not on my 2023 Bingo card, Michael Oher, the man whom the movie “The Blind Side” was based off of, now claims [he was never actually adopted]( but was coerced into a conservatorship. - After 50 years in office, New Jersey’s longest serving legislator, State Sen. Richard Codey, announced Monday he will [retire at the end of his current term.]( - Somehow I simultaneously want to know about local rat activity with [this new rat tracker]( and I'm also happy being blissfully unaware of it. - A new law that fines landlords leasing space to illegal weed shops is being [hailed as a “game changer” by NYC councilmembers]( who enacted the rule following a so-called “explosion” of unlicensed smoke shops opening up across the city. - With the Redbury Hotel in Manhattan being used as a migrant shelter, two restaurants run by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group [housed inside of it will be closing.]( - Danny Meyer is just one person who has been advocating for work authorization permits for migrants.
