We made it through the heat wave, at least for now! As of this writing, it is a lovely 73 degrees. Temperatures should reach the mid-80s this afternoon with a light breeze. It's the final day of July in New York City, where cyclists are [reevaluating the safety risks]( as more e-bikes and electric scooters join bike lanes. On Wednesday, a collision that allegedly involved several people riding motorized scooters on the Manhattan Bridge's bike lane left several people injured and hospitalized. Shari Stadel, a long time cyclist, was one of them. Charles Lane [spoke with her husband]( who said Stadel was released from the hospital on Friday, but doesn't remember much about the incident beyond entering the bridge's bike lane. Electric scooters are not permitted on the city's bridges, but the NYPD [told Lane last week]( that they were unaware of the crash and did not answer questions about a possible investigation. When asked about enforcement of scooters on the bridges, the department emailed a link to its main Twitter feed. Here's what else is happening: - Canarsie residents and advocates [rallied on Sunday to urge Mayor Adams]( to bring ferry service to the Brooklyn neighborhood.
- An NYC health vendor, which was accused of wasteful spending during the height of the pandemic, has [gotten more than $700 million in contracts]( since the pandemic began, public records show — including a $219 million contract filed earlier this month.
- With officials saying the city’s intake center is at capacity, groups of migrants were forced to [sleep in small buses parked on a Midtown street]( Saturday night after they were turned away from shelter.
- While the migrant crisis is still ongoing, Mayor Adams’ beef with the Biden administration [seems to have been quelled for now]( but there’s no telling whether that will last.
