Using footage captured by his friend who died while subway surfing last year, 16-year-old Alexander Antelman hopes the video serves as a cautionary tale amid an increase in subway surfing deaths this year. Here’s what else is happening: - Researchers believe NYC’s money would go further if it was [stashed in a public bank]( a move other cities, like Los Angeles, are making. The state, however, failed to pass legislation this year that would allow cities to create their own public banks. - The NYPD is attributing a recent drop in major crime to a [proactive approach to enforcement]( but others argue that there may be different reasons for the decrease, and that upping enforcement comes with downsides. - A spike in pet surrenders this summer has left some [NYC animal shelters overwhelmed]( and at capacity, struggling to stay afloat. - The city’s new budget allocates [$20 million a year to the “Right to Counsel”]( program, which provides free legal representation to tens of thousands of renters. - A car parked too close to rail tracks near Yankee Stadium was [hit by a Metro-North train]( Saturday. Luckily, no one was inside of the vehicle at the time. - Sen. Chuck Schumer called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Sunday to [investigate the amount of caffeine in PRIME energy drinks]( created by YouTubers Logan Paul and KSI. - A beloved Chinatown bookstore was badly damaged by a fire that erupted on July 4th in an apartment above the shop, but community members, writers and other supporters have [raised more than $300,000 to help the store recover.]( - A 25-year-old man who randomly fired a gun while riding a scooter in Brooklyn and Queens Saturday morning, killing an 86-year-old man and injuring three others, [was taken into police custody.]( - Monday's weather will bring [relief from a weekend]( of intense storms and extreme flooding which led to a death in Hudson Valley Sunday night. - Elton John’s [last touring show after 52 years]( happened over the weekend, and while it marked the end of the 76-year-old singer traveling the world for concerts, you may be able to catch him performing in other capacities. - With no more free buses from Port Authority Bus Terminal, migrants who arrive at the transit hub are [instructed to walk nearly a mile]( to an intake center, city officials said. - Other migrants are getting a little help from [generous neighbors in Brooklyn]( who are opening their homes for showers, going on food runs and sharing community spaces. - Your home might not make it to HGTV, but it sure can feel like it’s being criticized all the same, which, according to a study, is [making our living spaces less unique.]( - Perhaps we can take some unique decor inspo from this New Jersey town that now has a [giant troll sculpture]( made from recycled materials on display. - Speaking of renovations, why haven’t we converted all of those unused office buildings in NYC to apartments yet?
