WNYC can be here for you because you are here for us. Help us meeting our 10,000 donation goal. [View this email in a browser]( [Meet the Challenge!]( Dear Listener, It was mid-March of 2020 when I got a call from my boss. A novel virus was spreading around the country, and newsrooms were closing and moving to online-only operations. That would work for some of my colleagues, but the process of broadcasting remotely to millions of WNYC listeners would take some time to perfect. So would I mind moving into a hotel to keep the station running as the rest of the world retreated inside? For me, the choice was easy. “Can I bring my cat?” I asked. What was supposed to be just a few days in a hotel room became weeks and eventually months as the world grappled with what we’re now all too familiar with: the lockdowns, the round-the-clock ambulance sirens, the heartbreaking news stories. The “essential staff” of WNYC (and my cat) spent our days in a mostly-empty radio station, operating the machinery that kept us on the air and delivering the news during the darkest days of the pandemic. We spent our nights in a mostly-empty hotel that we shared with doctors and nurses from around the country who had come to New York City to staff our overwhelmed hospitals. It was during those months that you reminded me of why I work in public media. Some listeners said they appreciated the up-to-date news and information from official outlets they got from WNYC. For others it was the non news programming that offered a reprieve from reality. What affected me the most, though, were the listeners who said they were alone in their houses or apartments and just needed a voice they knew and trusted to get them through the day. [That is why your support is so important to this work](. No matter what happens in the world, WNYC will remain a voice you know and trust. You can have faith that the station will remain staffed by people who care deeply about making sure that even in the darkest of days, we’ll get through them together. We set out to get 10,000 donations by the time the drive ends on Thursday, and we are halfway to our goal. [If WNYC has been a source of information for you, if you depend on WNYC to get your news or to just keep you company during the day, please show your support by making a donation today](. [SHOW YOUR SUPPORT TODAY]( Listener support is at the center of everything we do here at WNYC, and makes all our programming possible. [Please make your donation today and help us reach our 10,000 donation goal by the end of the drive](. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
