They made the stressful, fear-filled trip to the hospital for testing, where Dinah was diagnosed with kidney disease at just 4 years old. All of a sudden, her life was filled with steroids, various medications and sacrifices – like being gluten-free, which is difficult for a kid. During this tough time, Dinah’s dad took her to the bookstore that he loved in their community and began reading with her every day. Ever since, Dinah has loved to read – using it to calm down and escape from the stress of her illness. So when she heard that this beloved bookstore was in danger of closing, she immediately knew that she wanted to use her wish to help. Dinah wished to donate books from the bookstore to kids at a local elementary school in need – saving the spot she loves and sharing her own love of reading with a future generation of readers. Dinah’s wish quickly became a full community effort. Everyone came together to organize a book fair at the elementary school, where Dinah packaged up some of her favorite books for each grade level into backpacks with pencils, bookmarks and various school supplies. Each member of our Make-A-Wish® team also picked out our favorite books and gifted them to Dinah, giving her a brand-new stack of books to dive into after her wish day.
