It’s long past time for us to pass laws that will keep our families safe. {NAME}, I first heard the news about the Uvalde tragedy right before a town hall I had already scheduled. It was a gut punch as I thought of how I felt when my own children were in school when Sept. 11th happened, and the terror I felt, wondering where the next attack would be. This past Tuesday night, I didn’t start the town hall with a moment of silence, as we’ve had too many of those. Instead, I asked my constituents what they think we need to do to bring about change. I told them that I had tried to work across the aisle on reasonable gun laws but that not a single Republican in DC took me up on my offer, so I was turning to them, my constituents in a very purple district, for their ideas. What followed was an amazing 45 minute conversation among Democrats and Republicans, and it was clear that their mandate to Congress is: get something done. I’m proud to have cosponsored legislation to ban assault weapons like the one used in Uvalde. Over a year ago, I joined my colleagues in the House again to pass legislation that would expand background checks and close dangerous loopholes that allow criminals to get guns — legislation that has not yet been passed by the Senate. These measures are common sense. Over 90% of Americans, including gun owners, support expanding background checks. It’s long past time for us to pass laws that will keep our families safe.
