[When Democrats Turn Out] Hi {NAME}, After the Supreme Court ruled that a key part of the Voting Rights Act was unconstitutional in 2013, the floodgates opened for states to pass restrictions on voting rights that disenfranchise minority voters and help keep the GOP in power. In the six years since that fateful decision, GOP legislatures and election offices closed 1,688 poll sites in 13 states, with many closed sites clustered in the South. In Texas alone, they shut down 750 polling places. In some Texas counties, that’s left upwards of 75% of polling stations closed -- which is especially disastrous in rural countries where voters must take off work, drive long distances, and wait in long lines just to exercise their Constitutional right to vote. Expanding voting rights should be a goal no matter what party you belong to -- yet Republican-controlled state legislatures are overseeing this sweeping dismantlement of voting rights across the country. They are gerrymandering their states’ election maps, creating poll taxes, and blocking automatic voter registration, all in an attempt to pick and choose the electorate. Republicans know that their ideas aren’t winning over any voters, so they now resort to silencing anyone who won’t vote for them instead -- and Democrats need to stand up to their blatant voter suppression. We need to rally and push back against the GOP’s onslaught of attacks on democracy, and the only way we’ll do this is vote them out and win these legislatures back. [WDTO is ready to fight against the GOP for control of state legislatures, and we know they’re going to throw millions of dollars in dark money into every election they can, so we need your help. Please, every donation made, no matter how small, will go toward making true, lasting change in our elections.
