This program helped her start a baking business and now can send four of her children to school. The U.N. World Food Programme works to ensure women and girls have equal access to nutritious food and economic opportunities while addressing the root causes of gender inequality. Each year, more than half of the people reached by the U.N. World Food Programme are women and girls: In 2021, the U.N. World Food Programme reached 128 million people – 68 million of whom were women and girls. In just six days, Cyclone Freddy caused rainfall that would normally take six months to fall in Malawi. The cyclone comes on top of high inflation and the worst cholera epidemic in decades. In response, the U.N. World Food Programme is providing emergency food assistance to 130,000 people and supporting the government and humanitarian community with trucks to transport supplies and boats for search and rescue efforts.
